Hooray! Campus InPower had its first official
success today, with the passage of "The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF)" at UC San Diego. TGIF was lumped into a larger fee campaign called "
Better Faster Stronger", which raised fees roughly $20 per quarter to support a variety of initiatives, from diversity training to student groups to sustainability projects. TGIF will get $2.34 of the increase, amounting to over $7 per year per student to support on-campus sustainability projects. A student and staff-led committee will oversee TGIF, and project proposals will come from campus individuals or departments.
Campus InPower is the 2008-2008 Wild Gift Project of recipient Rachel Barge, who is based in Oakland, CA. Rachel is currently advising over 30 active universities who are pursuing similar Green Fee campaigns this year, as well as Revolving Loan Fund initiatives, which are aimed at increasing funding for campus sustainability and capturing savings from efficiency. Rachel has spoken at 8 national and regional conferences this fall, training over 250 students from over 80 universities. She has also published a comprehensive campus funding guide, called "Raise The Funds", which has been co-distributed by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).
This spring, Rachel is slated to give trainings at the Clinton Global Initiative-University Conference, Powershift 2009, and NACUBO Smart and Sustainable Campuses Conference, among others. She is working on a new, project-based toolkit which will debut at the end of February.
