I was doing a bit of meditation today when the first two lines of this thing hit me. I thought "Great, a chance to write a song!!". Then as I wrote it, I though "Well, it will make a nice poem!". Then it kinda started to sound like Dr. Seuss... anyways, here's my inspiration for the day.

Sitting inside by open windows
A message arrives as the wind blows
Telling us what we already know
That nature alone can infinitely grow

Yet economies and material needs
seem to mount just as endlessly
and it's taking so long for us to see
drastic change is an inevitability

Like a deep breath in and a deep breath out
till our last day we'll be figuring out
that what we know and what we doubt
need to turn a bit more upside down

make the magic of the mystery

The smell of rain and the sound of cars
which do i choose? which will take me far?
One I avoid when it comes down hard
The other gets me to work or straight to the bar

While the car hits cats and pollutes the air
The rain gives life and washes our hair
Our feet and our food rejoice in moist air
Yet choosing rain seems the bigger scare

Because cars are in movies, songs and cliches
We've taught ourselves to love the things that they
provide us, like freedom, even though they may
be driving us more quickly toward our last day

These images of freedom are lies we've all made
That we have created and we need to spay
so that they stop reproducing and decay
replaced by love, laughter and natures way

Like a deep breath in and a deep breath out
till our last day we'll be figuring out
that what we know and what we doubt
need to turn a bit more upside down

make the magic of the mystery

And I know you can see the same things as me
I know that you sense our potentiality
the limitlessness of what we can acheive
If collectively we would all just believe

That WE CAN choose the way that these changes go
if change will be our end or if it will help us to grow
if we'll be smart enough to save our own souls
Or if the world will live without us as it did long ago

Like a deep breath in and a deep breath out
till our last day we'll be figuring out
that what we know and what we doubt
need to turn a bit more upside down

make the magic of the mystery

This is a wonderful poem. I just read it aloud, beat poet style and it has very nice rhythm and flow. "Make the magic of the mystery." "if we'll be smart enough to save our own souls. Or if the world will live without us as it did long ago." Amen, brotha!

i love it, iain!!! "Because cars are in movies, songs and cliches... We've taught ourselves to love the things that they... provide us, like freedom, even though they may... be driving us more quickly toward our last day." acknowledging and questioning our love affair with cars. it's a huge obstacle... i have to admit, i do love my car!

(i've always been a bit more oriented toward music than poetry, so i couldn't help hearing it sung sort of reggae-style...)
