Heather Lukacs Visiting Scholars Openings at Deep Springs College, Nevada

"The desert has a deep personality; it has a voice. Great leaders in all ages have sought the desert and heard its voice. You can hear it if you listen, but you cannot hear it while in the midst of uproar and strife for material things. 'Gentlemen, for what came ye into the wilderness?' Not for conventional scholastic training; not for ranch life; not to become proficient in commercial or professional pursuits for personal gain. You came to prepare for a life of service, with the understanding t… Continue

Pete Land The Cost of Addiction

Across the USA, many of us now take for granted our ability to cover long distances in short periods of time. I routinely schedule weekend trips to places over 100 miles away from my home and I'll do the 20-mile round trip to my parents' house for a cup of coffee. Environmentalists have given plenty of attention to our cultural addiction to cars. The focus has been on fossil fuel consumption and the associated pollution that contributes to smog, acid rain, and (of course) climate change. The m… Continue

Heather Lukacs Paul Hawken's 'Hopeful' 2009 Commencement Address

"YOU ARE BRILLIANT, AND THE EARTH IS HIRING. The earth couldn’t afford to send any recruiters or limos to your school. It sent you rain, sunsets, ripe cherries, night blooming jasmine, and that unbelievably cute person you are dating...." Read on for the complete Commencement address. Undoubtedly, the Wild Gift IS part of the hopeful, caring movement to which he refers. :-) Paul Hawken's Commencement Address University of Portland, May 3rd, 2009 When I was invited to give this speech, I was a… Continue

Jessica Bell Berkeley Sees Local, Sustainable Food As Solution to Climate Change

I worked with a great group of people to make sure that Berkeley included policies in its climate action plan that reduced greenhouse gas emissions from the food system. We were successful in including a number of policies that will provide support for the creation of a local, sustainable food system. It's an exciting first step and one of the first of its kind in the country, and I hope it serves a model that other groups in other cities and states can take and build upon. Read the Op-Ed I wro… Continue

Pete Land Harrowing Escape on the Yukon River

Back in August 2002, as a Wild Gift pilot recipient, I spent three weeks living on the banks of the Yukon River with a homesteader named Andy Bassich. We hunted and fished, laid the foundation for his cabin, and cared for his 24 sled dogs. Last week, Andy was in the news when the icy river rose dramatically and nearly swept him, his girlfriend, and the dogs away. Newspaper and radio coverage: Anchorage Daily NewsContinue

Heather Lukacs Secretary Salazar Creates New Office of Youth at Interior

“The new office will build our programs, expand opportunities for young people, teach them to hunt and fish, and help us coordinate our efforts across the bureaus,” Secretary Salazar said. Heather Lukacs Fayette County (WV) Young Farmers Program "to encourage enthusiasm for the farming tradition"

“This year we’ve all learned about the importance of creativity and self-reliance in uncertain economic times,” said Savanna Lyons, a volunteer who is coordinating the program. “Farmers are creative entrepreneurs. They know how to experiment, to deal with the variability of the seasons and to survive in difficult times through strong relationships in their communities. The qualities of a good farmer are qualities that serve a person throughout his or her life, and are qualities of a citizen who… Continue

Heather Lukacs Pres. Obama Signs Omnibus Public Lands Management Act of 2009

What will we as a nation choose to hold sacred and what will we sacrifice? Might there be a way to hold all places sacred? To care for landscapes as they provide for us? I am continually inspired by those who steward the lands where they work and live. Thank, you. And, as I wait for the dogwoods to bloom above the cliffs in the New River Gorge (ojalá), Obama has signed the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act of 2009. I recommend watching this video. http://www.c-span.org/Watch/watch.aspx?Progra… Continue

Pete Land Bush Protects 195,280 Sq. Miles of Wilderness!

Yep, you read that correctly. Our outgoing president isn't exactly known as a conservation advocate, but today the White House announced that he will protect 195,280 square miles of wilderness -- at sea. Covering nine sites over three areas in the Pacific Ocean, it will be the largest marine protected area in the world. Sportfishermen are enraged and we're already hearing "Yeah, but..." from environmentalists who have spent the past eight years feeling oppressed by his policies. My gut reacti… Continue
