Nigerian Improved Cook Stove Program
Mission, Goals, and Results
The Nigerian Improved Cook Stove Program's mission is to identify and popularize appropriate fuel wood efficient cook stove technology within rainforest communities in Cross River State, Nigeria. The long term goal of this project is the reduction of the rural woman’s energy burden, the impacts of deforestation, indoor air pollution and climate change. Monica’s personal purpose for this mission is to learn from and support the extraordinary people and culture of the participating rainforest communities.

Pilot Project Wrap-up
Five months after the workshops, over one hundred women and men who built and used the stoves were interviewed. Their feedback prompted a second edition of the training manual to be published. As well, VCDs of these interviews were made and distributed throughout the rainforest communities to increase the stature of both the stove and the people who use it. The interviews were complemented by a quantitative survey which found that the average Ekwuk stove saved at least 2610 lbs or 14 cubic meter… Continue

June Update
Before my trip to North America, my local project partner (and cookstove superstar) Linus and I were able to draft out the cookstove construction manual and employ an artist to do some excellent illustrations for it. As well, we were able to shoot the rough footage for an instructional video on how to build the cookstove. (Very rough, I have a lot to learn about movie production!) We plan to finalize both deliverables this week.
