Wild Gift Project
Project Title
The River Institute
Mission, Goals, and Results
The mission of The River Institute is to design and implement a Provo River Watershed based curriculum for 5th grade students at Soldier Hollow Charter School during the 2006-07 school year that calls students to action in environmental stewardship and community service, while meeting Utah State Core Curriculum Standards. The purpose of the River Institute, a 3-year project, is to establish the Institute at Soldier Hollow and use the data obtained to found the River Academy in Pennsylvania, a charter middle school on the Susquehanna River that will integrate a curriculum, based on the river’s watershed, into all grades and subjects. Kelly’s personal purpose is to create place-based watershed education to foster autonomous, life-long learning through environmental stewardship. She hopes to use The River Academy model, once established, to spread educational reform to other locales.
