Mission, Goals, and Results
Jessica is an organizer, trainer, speaker and campaigner for environmental and social change.

Jessica is currently the co-Director of the California Food & Justice Coalition where she manages a training program and works to pass state and local policy to create a more sustainable, local and community-driven food system. She also provides trainings on social change strategies - including organizing, fundraising, media strategy and passing policy.

Jessica's project during 2006-2007 provided her with the experience necessary to secure a leadership position within the food movement.

The mission of Jessica’s project, “Environmental Justice Advocate”, was to support grassroots campaigns and provide training to citizens who will advocate for sustainability, democracy and justice in San Francisco’s east bay region. It is Earth Justice Network’s goal that one of the campaigns it supports will succeed in passing progressive legislation through the Oakland or Berkeley City Council in 2007. Of the 200 advocates that Jess will train in 2006/07 she anticipates, three years later, that 10 will continue to be engaged in social change work, 2 will work on the identified campaigns and one will train and support new advocates and campaigns. Jessica’s vision is to inspire, educate and bring people together to facilitate collaborative, transformative action that generates environmental justice and democracy in the United States.

Berkeley Sees Local, Sustainable Food As Solution to Climate Change

I worked with a great group of people to make sure that Berkeley included policies in its climate action plan that reduced greenhouse gas emissions from the food system. We were successful in including a number of policies that will provide support for the creation of a local, sustainable food system. It's an exciting first step and one of the first of its kind in the country, and I hope it serves a model that other groups in other cities and states can take and build upon.

Hi Jess - Might you know of any online farmer's markets (like the one Cody described on our trip) that operate in the Bay Area that connect small farms with organizations (Churches, schools, businesses) or individuals? I recently returned from Hoes Down Harvest Festival at Full Belly Farm where I was talking up the idea of an online farmer's market and would love to share local examples (if available).

Sending you peace & light, friend.

Hi Jess-

Here is the site we discussed, amazingcarbon.com. Check it out, and if you get the chance, I'd love to know what you think of it.

You mentioned that you had some links to pass my way. I'd love to check them out. I'm particularly interested in any funding that would be out there for a local school lunch program or funds to help us integrate educational programs into the farm.

I had a wonderful time with you over the past week and never forget that I was the one who missed you first. You can't give all the credit to the pasta salad.

Look forward to hearing back from you,

Cody

Hi Jess!

It was a pleasure getting to know you this past week! Keep up the good organizing and let's plan a dinner locally sometime soon. I'll be presenting my work in a research group at Berkeley on Sept 23. You are definitely invited to dine on the roof of the water tower in Los Altos sometime soon.

And do check out the Matewan about labor organizing in West Virginia mines in th 1920s. It was filmed in a railroad town right on the New River near my WV home.

May the beauty of the river continue to inspire your daily life.

In peace,
