Mission, Goal, and Results
Eco Expressions is a nature writing program for youth, based on the healing powers of outdoor exploration and creative writing. In 2004-2005, she provided the innovative literary arts and ecology curriculum to over 140 urban, at-risk students in San Diego.

Since then she has led hiking, camping, canoeing, sailing, and gardening outings with over 30 youth organizations and schools in CA and ID and adapted the Eco Expressions writing curriculum to grades K-12.

With the help of Wild Gift, Jan received a 40K grant to bring Eco Expressions to rural youth in Blaine County, Idaho in 2006-07. She worked with nearly 100 students in the Blaine County School District, conducting afterschool and in-school Eco Expressions fieldtrips.

In 2007, Jan wrote and published Nature Writing Field Guide for Teachers, the multidisciplinary curriculum for the program. Educators and counselors from several states are currently using the curriculum, including: California, Idaho, Wisconsin, Illinois and New York.

Her long-term goal is to establish an Environmental Writing Field Institute and continue publishing books about the wonders of the outdoors.
