Wild Gift Project

Project Title
Convergence

Mission, Goals, and Results
The mission of Convergence is to promote a network of people and organizations working towards equalizing global access to basic needs while re-establishing the ecological integrity of the planet. Convergence’s key action in creating this network is the establishment of an eco-training center and curriculum in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The center and curriculum will be used by groups of 20 students, international and Indian, who will come together for a 6 week training, volunteer and outreach program in eco-literacy and social action. With an anticipated 40 alumni in the first year, Iain’s goal is to increase Convergence’s scope to include 200 alumni at the end of 3 years and to begin replicating the model in other countries. Iain’s personal vision is to live a replicable model of the possible symbiosis between humanity and nature while at the same time improving the global community’s access to their basic needs.

The Canada Solution

Hi Folks,

After the re-election of George W. Bush a friend of mine sent me this link as an appeal to use my good nature to help find long-term solutions for politically, socially or culturally alienated Americans.

Let us not ask what our country can do for us, but what we can do to get to Canada. With glowing hearts we see the rise!

A Rocky Mountain Poem

I was doing a bit of meditation today when the first two lines of this thing hit me. I thought "Great, a chance to write a song!!". Then as I wrote it, I though "Well, it will make a nice poem!". Then it kinda started to sound like Dr. Seuss... anyways, here's my inspiration for the day.

Sitting inside by open windows
A message arrives as the wind blows
Telling us what we already know
That nature alone can infinitely grow

Yet economies and material needs
seem to mount just as endlessly
and it'… Continue

Hi Iain -- Today I was reflecting on memorable moments of our float - and one of them was definitely Bob reading The Giving Tree and all of the Giving Tree references that followed throughout the trip. Thanks for carrying that along! :)

Thanks so much for the wonderful mixed CDs... I have been listening to them as I hang my river clothes out to dry on the water tower roof. The songs are beautiful, relevant, and much appreciated.

I hope you have found your way safely to Boulder. May you continue to carry the Spirit of the river with you in your travels.

You have a standing invitation to visit the intentional community in Palo Alto, CA we discussed. www.ecomagic.org

Peace & Joy,
heather

Hello Iain, I'm Justin. Your project looks exciting...and I think Auroville is the perfect place for it. I spent about three months there in 2004, and I keep longing to go back. Perhaps you have already thought of and explored these suggestions, but I can't help but think of some good folks to talk with and some interesting ideas to include...(1) Ecological Restoration. What the first Aurovillians did, in cooperation with the villages, in terms of reforestation is really an amazing story, and one that could be an great case study for your curriculum. (2) Village Action, with Aurelio and others, have done some awesome work linking Auroville to the villages, doing community development for their mutual benefit. Just some thoughts and memories from my time there. Like I said, you've probably explored all this already, but good luck and have fun!

Iain, Have you heard of Idealist? You should definitely post the Convergence course there: http://www.idealist.org/ ... I think they have a large network internationally. Same thing with Earth Corps -- Kayanna says they bring a lot of international students together, which might be another way to network with potential candidates around the world: http://www.earthcorps.org/ ... Perhaps you could get it into their newsletter, or ask their staff to send it out to alums? Hope all is going wonderfully!!!

Building started yesterday here at Convergence. We're building 4 huts using renewable materials such as Palmyra wood, coconut thatched roofing, rope made from tree bark and we're wiring all of the huts with solar electricity. It's nice to get my hands on some hammers and nails.
