Wild Gift Project
Project Title
Conservation Initiative Consulting Chile
Mission, Goals, and Results
The mission of Conservation Initiative Consulting in Chile is to help the Contulmo Landowners, a network of 15 individuals in the Nahuelbuta Range, Chile, form a cluster of private protected areas and, in the process, develop a replicable, community-based, private conservation model. To further this goal, CIC intends to provide the Network with the necessary baseline information and conservation management skills by September 2007. CIC’s purpose is to integrate biological research, community capacity-building, and conservation to inspire communities to protect biodiversity and promote sustainability. Emily predicts, in five years, the Network will be a strong growing organization committed to the protection of their lands. It will have formed several private protected areas owned by Network members and will actively participate in environmental education with local schools, restoration, and ecotourism activities. While Emily will be available for consulting and will support Network development as needed, her role will reduce as members independently manage their own lands. A long-range goal is to establish national conservation legislation that officially recognizes Private Protected Areas. Emily’s personal purpose is to be actively engaged in caring for other human beings and our planet by honoring life, cultivating respect, and making responsible decisions.
