Project Title
Enabling Citizens
Project Mission, Goals, and Results
Enabling Citizens, in partnership with Urban Vision, provided 45, K-5 children from Friendship Court, a federally subsidized housing project in an impoverished neighborhood of Charlottesville, Virginia, four unique field trips whose dialogue focused on wildness, sustainability and citizenship. The children were inspired to think beyond the common focus of standardized testing mandated under 'No Child Left Behind". Urban Vision, a Charlottesville foundation that has worked with children at Friendship Court since January 2004, has incorporated Drew's teachings into their program. To date, the children continue to play outside and receive tutoring in small groups. Preliminary data reveal a rise in test scores as well as attendance and grades.
